What is clinical research?
Modern medicine has developed through "clinical trials," which are studies conducted on people to examine the effectiveness and safety of "new treatments and diagnostic methods." Among clinical trials, research conducted to obtain government approval using drugs or medical devices that have not yet been approved by the government is specifically called "clinical trials."
(For information about clinical trials, please refer to https://www.fuzoku-hosp.tokai.ac.jp/about/outline/cancer/clinical-trial/).
In addition to clinical trials, research using samples and information provided by the general public, including patients, is also important for the advancement of medical care and medicine. Research that is scientifically designed and planned in consideration of medical necessity and importance, with the aim of elucidating the causes of disease, improving disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and improving the quality of life of patients, is called "clinical research."
All research conducted on human subjects at Tokai University Hospital (including Tokyo Hospital and Hachioji Hospital) is thoroughly reviewed by a review committee in accordance with relevant regulations to ensure the protection of the rights, safety, and welfare of participants, and as a result, permission to proceed is obtained from the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Director of the Hospital. Even after permission to proceed is given, rigorous review is conducted on progress reports, change applications, and completion reports to ensure there are no problems with safety or efficacy.
Information disclosure regarding life science and medical research involving human subjects is posted on the Tokai University School of Medicine Clinical Research Review Committee website under "Clinical Research Information Disclosure," and a booklet is available in the "Research Plaza" on the first floor Tokai University Hospital, so please take a look.
